☆ Shibuya Animate
Continuing the previous post where I explained about the best place to purchase new anime goods in Shibuya, here is their counterpart:
The best place to purchase used anime goods in Shibuya: Mandarake! Mandarake is another chain store, and they carry some new goods, but their focus is new and/or retired anime/manga goods!
It’s a veritable mecca of anime/manga awesomeness! Chances are, whatever you are looking for, there is a chance of finding it here!
Here is the info and come pictures (not allowed) of their Shibuya branch:

And finally…. a tour, anyone?
Mandarake is actually underground, but it’s perfectly visible from the street.
You can find it via the map above, about a 5-minute walk from the famous Hachiko exit of Shibuya station.

The outside of the building is somewhat… interesting ![]()

As is the staircase down..

Down one flight of stairs, you’ll pass some eerie mannequins.

And go deeper..

And deeper, into the bowels of darkness…… finally you see some gachapon machines (machines where you put in a few coins and get a random character item).

Finally, the dimly-lit store is in front of you. Loud music is playing.

Rows and rows of old manga greet you. The manga in this section tends to be cheap. Behind this are doujinshi (fan-made comics). Lots and lots of doujinshi of all kinds, including yaoi (gay) and yuri (lesbian).

More manga.

Artbooks below the glass cases, and various goods inside. It changes almost every day based on what stock comes in. Mandarak operates by a “sellback” policy. They buy items from people who bring them in, and then resell them to everyone else. So, if you see something, grab it up while you can!

More manga and display cases.

Old issues of Shonen Sunday, one of the big shonen manga magazines aside from JUMP. By old, I mean 1985 old! I was only 5 years old!

Some artbooks at a good price!

Model kits.

The cashier. You take items here if you want to sell or buy!

There is a LOT of manga! Including old, really expensive volumes (near the register).

There are also… rather odd things as well. XD

And thankfully, an elevator to get back up to the surface world!

And that concludes my introduction/tour of Shibuya Mandarake! Tell me what you think, if you plan to go, and if you’ve been there before! Bought anything interesting?

hey there! I’ve been to the Shibuya branch twice and just wondering if the resale section is open to foreigners as well? I do have some related stuff that I intend to sell to them but I’m not too sure whether I need to fill in any forms or show identification… thanks!
Woahh, so much manga O-O; ! I wish there was a store like that in America hahah.
I hear there are some stores like that on the West Coast. ^^
that store looks kinda creepy, honestly! underground… bad lighting… lol!
It IS creepy! Too creepy! XD
Uwah, Mandarake always took way too much of my money…remember how crazy it was shipping everything back to America? @_@
That was… tiring, to say the least!
I would be going there for mangas mostly, and that would probably be the older stuff like Sailor Moon, Peach Girl, etc…
I was looking for Sailor Moon DVD boxes while I was in Japan but I never found any. Have you seen them around? I’d really like to pick them up on my next visit in Tokyo! Any tips would be greatly appreciated~
They’re out of print now, probably so your best bet is the old resale shops like this. They’ll only have what others sell back, though.
Otherwise, maybe try Amazon.co.jp or yahoo auctions?
cool place!! ^.^ if i ever come here, i’d probably buy an artbook…
I like how underground and dark it is lol. Probably would entertain myself by the gachapons or get some of the art books xD
Coool! I would buy some Manga, Art Books, and probably something from the gachapon!!!
Oooooo looove the steampunky entrance
Ah, my time in Tokyo wasn’t enouuuuuuuugh
When I went to one in Osaka, the cashiers in cosplay took turns going on a stage to sing karaoke anime songs. I thought that was pretty awesome.
Wait, one of the pictures here has a more recent manga of Shouen Sunday, you can see Silver Spoon/Gin No Saji on the side cover! Right on top of the Young Jump. I guess they didn’t organize it yet.
I bet you could find some of the original printings of Dragon Ball there!
