The 40th Shonen JUMP Treasure new mangaka contest You can find a bigger scan here.
When Hisashi Sasaki, the Deputy Director of Shueisha, talked about JUMP Treasure a few months ago, I asked my followers if they would be interested in me talking about it. The answer was “yes” all across the board.
Keep in mind that I’ve never entered Treasure myself!
But all of the information is publicly available, if you know where to find it. It also would help to be able to read it, since most of it is in Japanese, which I can help you out with
There is an english page for Treasure. It is here: http://www.shonenjump.com/e/manga-shou/treasure.html
But it only gives the bare minimum of information. It’s most likely because, in all honesty, I don’t think that Shonen JUMP has any interest right now in publishing anything by someone who can’t read Japanese. It sounds harsh, and I would have hated to hear that if I was sitting abroad wanting to enter. But Sasaki himself said on twitter: Our manga awards are open for everybody, but, sorry, in Japanese only for now. We are not capable to evaluate non-J manga properly yet.
If you want to enter, though, I say NEVER FEAR! Just get (or pay) someone to translate for you into Japanese and try your luck! I’m sure that they’d find someone to help them work with you if you showed them something that they couldn’t resist! (Do, there is no try.)
So, back to the contest.
First, let’s go through the advertisement.

I scanned this myself from last year’s Shonen JUMP October 25th issue. The contest is obviously long over, but I still have this issue hanging around because I was printed in it. (I worked on Konomi-sensei’s one-shot Moonwalker) Obviously this one is far over, but I thought you’d like to see the ad anyways.
This whole page is an interview with this month’s judge, in this case Akatsuki Akira, the artist (but not author) of Medaka Box. So let’s move on.
The left side is far more exciting, as it outlines the guidelines! There is a website for the contest, but it’s not even mentioned on the page, so really, all of the information that you need to enter is right here!

The box says:
This is what’s awesome about J-Treasure!
☆ There is a prize awarded every month, without fail!! Every manga that is worthy of one will be awarded a prize!! It’s your big chance!! Challenge it!!
☆ We hold a twice-yearly awards ceremony!! Those who are chosen are invited to participate in the awards ceremony in Tokyo, held twice a year!!
☆ The judge is someone who is a JUMP author!! The judges are mangaka currently writing series in Jump!! You don’t get a chance like this every day!!
☆ You’ll get the “Special edition Manga-making book!! Those who want it, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope of 580 yen!! (I assume you’d need a lot higher postage if you want them to send it abroad)
☆ The useful evaluation sheet!! Comments from the evaluation of the winners y the judge and the editorial department!! A must-see!!
That’s all here.
They sure use a lot of exclamation marks.
So, let’s move on.

This deals with what we all want to know most; PRIZES!! (Yay! \(^o^)/)
It says:
Supporting your dream!! Huge prizes!!
☆ Those who are ranked just below the finalists still get 10,000 yen!!
☆ Finalists get 50,000 yen!!
☆ Honorable mentions: 300,000 yen plus your work published on the JUMP homepage!!
☆ Semi-finalists: 500,000 yen plus your work published in either Shonen JUMP or one of the brother magazines!!
☆ Winners: 1,000,000 yen plus your work published in either Shonen JUMP or one of the brother magazines!!
Sounds good to me!

This panel says at the top: You can bring your manga in in person too!! (more exclamation points!)
Next to the map are the directions to Shueisha’s offices. (I’ve been there twice, quite a long time ago
)
An 18-minutes walk from JR Suidobashi station.
A 2-minute walk from exit A1 of Jinbouchou station (Hanzomon line, Toei-shinjuku line, Toei-mita line).
The black excited-looking speech-bubble says “IT’S RIGHT HERE DUDE!” (Forgive my translation skills. But that’s really what it sounds like in Japanese.)
And in case you can’t tell, the numbers at the bottom are the phone number
If you want to call from abroad, you need to add +81 to the beginning.

This last, lovely box adds the most relevant information, like size, page count, deadline… Oh, things that you just might want to know.
The date is the big announcement at the top. This is October of last year, so it’s far from over. But not to fear: Treasure is a monthly contest!! So, every single month ever, rain-or-shine, you can enter! If you miss one month’s deadline, no sweat! Just enter the following month! And so on
So let’s see, what does it say:

It pretty much says the same thing as above
(The next competition I write about will be one for a shoujo magazine!)

Hello I’m sorry I’m 2 years late but this post was
Vitally helpful in providing information on a contest I’ve been wanting to enter. I’m only a junior in high school at the moment but ever since i was 8 my dreams are to become a Manga-ka for shuseia and have one of the great series. If you wouldn’t mind could you tell me how well did you do on this contest and what are the judges looking for in the best submission? And the is manga paper we buy online is the same size as the one required for this contest? And once we finish creating the entire story the text for the manga just needs to be written in pencil correct? I’m so sorry I asked alot of questions lol
Hello, im fourteen this year, and I was wondering if my age is a problem. Also, if it is possible for me to participate, is it alright to draw it digitally? Thanks.
Hey thx for the post but wiz wondering do u have to above a specific age to enter. I’m thirteen but would really like to enter so is there an age limit and if so would it be ok if I just got my parents permission?
Hi,
i want to enter, but i have a few questions and i want to know if you could maybe answer them. first of all, does it have to be the original manuscript? if so, what happens if you have a manga that you have written but this page size is too small/large? (as in could you still send it in and would it still count)
i’ve been trying to find someone who can answer these questions cause i really want to enter.
thank you!
Yes, you have to send the original manuscript. Most places will return it to you, however.
For the page size, do you mean the physical size? If so, then you should redo it (sorry!). They are very clear about the size of the page that they want. It’s not to say that you can’t send in a different size, but it’s very competitive to get your manga published, and you don’t want to give them any reason to reject you!
hello jamie,
i finally got hold of 230-260mm by 330-365mm with 180 by 270 reference frame. could you please tell me if the size of a manga page needs to be contained within the reference frame or can it be done on the entire manuscript paper.
thanks.
I’ve had the dream to write manga since I was a mini lil 10 year old. When I realized I had to learn Japanese that didn’t stop me. Everyone has said I would have to settle for American comics. But that’s not what I wanted. I want to be in shonen jump. All I need is the proper supplies and a way to learn Japanese in this small town.
This is reallly an amazing post.
And i was wandering if you could send them a “silent manga” or in english cuz i can’t write japanese and also how can i get the special-edition manga making book ? And thnx for your answer
Hello jamie, I really exciting about comic contest. But I don’t really write shonen story. I found this site (shoujo manga magazine) http://ribon.shueisha.co.jp/rsmt/index.html I don’t know what this about, but I think it was a manga competition, or am I wrong? Could you please translate this for me? or just a short summary about this page is alright. If you don’t mind ^^
When it is talking about the rules and the amount of pagesfor the competition, when it says “Story manga → 31 or 45 pages” Does it mean put the art on one side of a page only (one sided) or do we put art on both sides of the page(front and back/double sided)?
Also do we HAVE TO send them the original? Can we send in a copy?
If we live in America(U.S.) will they call/e-mail/send a letter telling us we won or something?
You must send in the original. You can have it sent back to you if you ask, though.
Only draw on one side of the page.
Usually, the editor’s office will call you, but if you note that you would rather be contacted by email, that would probably be okay, too.
Hello ,
Thank you for the post!!!
I really want to participate in this competition…I just wanted to Know if you google translate will the japanese come all right …
And also is it necessary to use manuscript paper…Do I have to buy it from online or can I use standard B4…
Thank you in advance
Definitely not. You should find or hire someone to translate for you if you can’t speak japanese.
You can use standard B4 paper, however don’t use copy paper. Use a thicker paper or paper-board, and just make sure that it is the right size.
Oh God, so happy to find this post, you’re amazing. I intended to participate but there remains one rule bugging me, does the rule say the participants must hand in the original manuscript? I’m not allowed to send the print version right?
That’s right. You can send a printout on manga paper if you do the work digitally, though. Otherwise, send in the originals.
Thank you so much,
I do the total work digitally so I don’t have a paper original version, working traditional is really a pain coz I don’t have any assistants, though I used to do it for nearly ten years and had several series published at local.
If i can send a printout, must i print on B4 paper ?
I have already sent my manga to treasure contest.
I have drawn in B4 paper tranditional and add screentone by digital. So i sent them my manuscript tranditional + 1 cd i added screentone @_@ . I afraid that they even did’t read it because i sent in wrong form.
I sent my manga on March 2012 .My manga was failed . I don’t have any information about my manga till i sent it.
I want to try again but this time, i must be sure about the rule of shounen jump ‘s contest.
Thanks so much for your information and sorry about my english ^^”
Yes, the printout must be full size. I’m sorry that you failed. Good luck next time!!
Thank you so much for your information ;____;
Eto I wanted to enter it but i have some problems but I’m not sure if this can be solved because i can not find it anywhere… I rather do manga digitally cuz i suck at traditional (the ink hate me even though i’m trying everyday XD) But to the point have you ever used manga studio and if do you know what sizes should i do because now Jump writes smht like this
Manuscript paper: Length 330-365 mm, horizontal 230-260 mm.
Reference frame: Height 270 mm, side 180 mm. The same as 1.2 times of “Weekly Shonen Jump” and because there are like 3 parts that i would have to fill out in manga studio i get confused… like i get to the part with final size but then… >.>
So if you know it would be great and if not then i will look more.. >.>
You need to make sure that the area that your important artwork is contained in is the smaller size, and the actual size of the artwork is the larger one. In other words, the area between the two is the bleed room (the part that is supposed to be cut off, but there just in case the printer is slightly off-center).
ありがと!Thank you! (after second of though i think I wont spam more in other languages how thankful i’m ^^)
Thanks for the post very helpful. i no its over a year old but has anything changed about the competion? also can you please explain how do i put in that neat wrting in the speech bubbles because by hand my writng is not straight or neat or is it done by using the net? if so please explain..
Thank you.
Nothing has changed to my knowledge. ^^
You just need to write legibly in pencil. The editors will add the professional, printed text during the editing process.
it’s 2012 now and I just read this post. Oh I wish I’d be able to enter. I was wondering is this still going on, thank you and awesome post by the way
Yep, the contest is ongoing! It will exist as long as the magazine does!
ahh I see that’s great! thank you for replying
woah.. i thought I’ll never be able to find this post..
thanks heavens..T_T
I’ve been looking for this site all along..(relieved)
So what does “1.2 times bigger than the size that Shonen Jump is published at” mean?
Manuscript paper: Length 330-365 mm, horizontal 230-260 mm.
How do we get it in that size? the standard A4 is 210x297mm..
Are we also able to enter both Jump Treasure & Tezuka Award together?
If you search on google (maybe Amazon, too), there are places that sell manga paper. If you can’t find that, then B4 paper should be available from office stores or online. Good luck!
please, do you know how do they contact you if you win or anything like that? and what if the manga was read from left to right and in english? man i should have paid way more attention.
It must be read from right to left and in Japanese.
I assume that they call or email you to ell you that you’ve won!
Hi.I want to a write a story for this competition then have an artist illustrate it. Are they accepting digital (printed) pages? I think I heard from someone before that only accept traditional? Is it true? Thanks in advance!
ANy pages you send in must be physical. So, in your case what you would do is print them out at 100% size (make sure it’s the right size!), and then mail in the prints! They won’t accept files on a CD or anything like that.
I thought they would only accept traditionally toned pages, with written text and sfx… Good thing I still have a chance. I’ll try to send an entry this year.
Oh btw, i forgot to say something. You’re awesome!!! You inspire me a lot! Thanks!
Hey guys, I know this page was commented on like last year, But is it possible for someone in Sydney Australia to enter? It’s my dream to become a manga-ka, Is it possible?
Yes! Anyone from anywhere can enter, but the entries must be in Japanese.
I know this is super late but Thanks for the info!!! I would love to enter a shonen jump contest but i need to improve my art style (i would be facing the japanese after all) and i need to learn how to write japanese, I already started lessons.
Do you think they only want Kanji writing?
If you write in Japanese, then yes, you should definitely write in kanji. Actually, the use of kanji/katakana/hiragana in certain ways can add emphasis, change the meaning, etc. If you can get it, I would recommend finding a Japanese native to help you.
THATS AWESOME my number one dreame is to go to japan and work in the manga bissnes if anyone knows any conection to any manga magazen shonen jump or any other popular manga magazen corperation thats awesome
Karurosu· rōsha remember that name cuz that the name of the of the future number one manga writer in japan
I’d love to enter this contest one day~
do you think they accept english mangas?
Japanese people are very fond of manga.
I assume with this kind of contest Shueisha can find new talent easily and put them on the back burner.
It’s good way for introducing yourself and your work anyway ^^
You tried it ?
I haven’t yet, but I’m working on a submission right now! (to a different contest though!)
hi i would like to enter the shonen jump treasure contest and i was wondering if you could give me the proper translations for my dialog. i know you dont know me and its out of the blue and its alot to ask but it would be a dream come true i want to have the best chance possible at winning!!!!.
I’m sorry, I don’t have time to do it myself, but there are a lot of people out there willing to translate for a fee, so I’m sure that you can someone to help you. Good luck!
First of,thatnk u so much for giving info on this. ^^
And a question : I noticed that in the english site with info on the contest it says u send ur work at the adress they give u below.
So practically..it doesnt matter WHEN ur work arrives there cause there is a contest every month. So for example if i send my work anyday they will consider it for the contest that is on at the moment my work arrives there/? Do i have ths right? XD’
Yep, you have it right! d(^-^)
Congrats, very good post.
Well, I am only a part of the technical team for Megatokyo, but hey, we aren’t in Treasure… but we are published in Kodansha BOX. Does that count?
It wasn’t part of a contest, right? But you definitely deserve recognition for being published in Japan!! That’s really amazing– I was so surprised when I first heard (years ago).
How has the reaction been from the japanese fans?
As far as I know, the reception has been pretty good. They still want more of it, so that’s a good sign, and we do get fan mail, too. No, wasn’t part of a contest, they actually sought Fred out to ask if they could publish it. (oh, and sorry for the multiple posts… your captcha was not playing nice
)
That’s great! I used to be a huge Megatokyo fan myself– I should get caught up on reading it. I’ll see if I can get a look at the japanese version too, that will just be awesome to see
And sorry about the capcha! I’ve been having a ton of problems! One day I’ll get it to work right! XD
Well, I am only a part of the technical team for Megatokyo, but hey, we aren’t in Treasure… but we are published in Kodansha BOX. Does that count?
